Feel like Quitting? 

When you walk into your office what do you feel in your gut?  Does it make you want to just vomit?  How about that project that you keep putting off and putting off.  The deadline that was originally months away so you had plenty of time.  No reason to rush into anything.  But now it is only weeks away and you still haven’t even started looking at the requirements.  How will you fit it into your schedule, will you have enough time to meet the deadline or have to come up with a creative and reliable excuse for your lack of planning?

Sometimes there are things that you Have to do, even though you don’t want to and procrastinating about them will just make the situation worse.  Overcoming the reality of Why you really don’t want to take on a task or chore can be an eye-opening experience.  Some of the most popular reasons for procrastinating about a project  are:

1.  Fitting it into your already busy schedule.  Your schedule is already packed and you just don’t know when and how you will find time during the day – or night – to get it done.  So it just gets put off again and again and again.  The result is that you have put yourself in a pickle now because there really isn’t time to get it done.  And now, you will have to answer to someone and the excuse won’t be pretty…or believed!  And it probably isn’t going to be pretty.

2.  You really just don’t want to do it.  Why are you being asked to do this anyway?  More and more, responsibilities are shifting in the office.  It is easier and more cost effective to ask staff to double-up on duties and this may mean that you are working harder and longer than before.

3.  It is out of your comfort zone.  You don’t know anything about what you are being asked to do and (if you weren’t being asked) you would never Want to do this type of project.  But, that is not how things are working out and you are going to have to step up, but how?

I just went through some of this myself.  I was asked to produce a proposal for a large project.  As a Professional Organizer, this would be a dream come true…months of work with a deadline and, the worse/best part, a proposal put into “government” terms.  They had so many acronyms that I had never heard of before and I really had no clue “how” to do it, “what” it entailed or “when” I would be able to get it done.  So here is what I did. 

I wrote down a synopsis from my notes.  We had met twice about the project.  What exactly was being expected of Organization Direct?  What was going to be expected of the agency?  How much time would I need to get it all done and How would I do it?

It wasn’t easy…honestly, more than I expected.  My legal background did come in handy with the wording and one of the best things that I did was talk to my colleagues.  They gave me some guidance and shared their expertise as well.  And wala…I produced the hardest project ever.  It was SO gratifying to put it all together and hit Send on the email.  Whew!  It was such an absolutely amazing feeling.  Breaking it all down into chunks, piece by piece made it happen.
